Tax Topic MN 2 - Minnesota Deductions


In this topic we will cover Minnesota deductions and mainly the differences between Minnesota and federal returns. Please use the "Reading Material" link for Minnesota reading material.

Read the reading material and answer the questions on this page (scroll down). So before you go to the reading material look at steps 1 and 2 here and at the questions on this page.

Step 2 Take each question below (scroll down) and write a paragraph for each question as part of an essay. Include one paragraph for an introduction and a paragraph for a conclusion. Each paragraph should have at least three complete sentences. Once you have your essay prepared, click on Submit Essay to submit your work one paragraph at a time. Tax Interview Topic MN 2

Introduction - For the introduction part of this essay, you may want to first answer the following three questions with one paragraph each and then come back to fill in the introduction and mention something from each of the three paragraphs.

What do you do for your Minnesota tax return if you itemized deductions on your 2017 federal Form 1040 and included state income tax or sales tax? Do you have to worry about this if you filed Form 1040A or Form 1040EZ?

   
3. What items must you adjust on your Minnesota tax return and on what schedule do these adjustments go (mention a few)? Why do you have to either subtract or add or make these adjustments? When may you be required to pay Minnesota alternative minimum tax (AMT)?
   
4. What does it mean by "You may reduce your taxable income if you qualify for a subtraction" when it refers to Minnesota state income tax refund included on your federal tax return as taxable income?
   
5. For the conclusion part of this essay, you may mention something from each of the three previous paragraphs and offer an opinion. What do you think about all this? You may want to start this paragraph "In Conclusion..."
