IRS continuing tax education (CE) providers must be registered with the IRS to provide Continuing tax education (CE) for tax return preparers, enrolled agents, and enrolled retirement plan agents. Every provider has an IRS continuing tax education provider Number. Our provider number is CCWXA.
Everyone who is registered as a tax preparer and thus is required to complete
the Registered Tax Return Preparer competency exam is required to complete IRS
continuing tax education. You are required to complete 15 hours of approved IRS
continuing tax education, which includes 3 hours of federal tax law updates, 2
hours of ethics, and 10 hours of federal tax law.
Did
you know that there is no IRS continuing tax education requirement for 2011? The
IRS continuing tax education requirements start in 2012. Starting in 2012 all
PTIN holders are required to complete approved IRS continuing tax education
starting in 2012. In addition, these preparers have until December 31, 2012 to
pass the IRS Registered Tax Return Preparer competency exam in addition to
completion of the required 15 hours IRS continuing tax education requirements.
These 15 hours of approved IRS continuing tax education must be completed every
year by the tax professional.
To
find an IRS continuing tax education provider go to the public listing of IRS
continuing tax education -
approved CE
providers. The IRS only allows you to use approved IRS continuing tax
education providers. The rules have changed from previous IRS continuing tax
education requirements that permitted you to use any qualified educational
institution as stated in Cir. 230. Now these IRS continuing tax education
providers must be specifically listed with the IRS.
Don't
let the new IRS continuing tax education requirements for tax preparers scare
you. The competency exam from the IRS will be just a check of your competency to
do your job. The new IRS continuing tax education requirements for tax preparers
should only include basic items that you should know already. Under the new IRS
continuing tax education requirements for tax preparers, preparers are to
participate in ongoing IRS continuing tax education that they should have been
doing on their own already. The same applies to the new IRS continuing tax
education requirements for tax preparers to comply with ethical standards that
should already have been in place.
